Londoners invited to have their say on Bakerloop bus service

Londoners are being consulted on a proposed new express bus service dubbed the Bakerloop to run between Waterloo and Lewisham.

If it goes ahead, the new Bakerloop express bus service would enable people to travel between key south London destinations, and beyond, more quickly and easily.

It is an effort to mirror the success of the Superloop, a 138km network of express bus services that has added more than six million kilometres per year to the capital’s network.

London’s transport commissioner Andy Lord said: “We know from the success of the Superloop that express bus services are providing a hugely valuable way for Londoners to travel.

“Feedback from customers is hugely important to us and I would urge everyone to respond to the consultation to enable us to create a bus service which benefits everyone travelling in south east London and beyond.”

Launched in 2023, the Superloop aimed to provide customers with quicker journey times to key town centres, hospitals, schools and transport interchanges, helping to make sustainable bus travel a more popular option for people in outer London.

Londoners are now invited to provide feedback on the proposed bus stops for the new Bakerloop route during a consultation which will run until 14 March 2025, with the service potentially able start in the autumn.

Working alongside local councils and partners, the plans for the brand-new bus service would largely mirror the proposed Bakerloo Line extension route, running between Waterloo, Elephant & Castle and Lewisham via Burgess Park, Old Kent Road, New Cross Gate, Lewisham station and Lewisham town centre.

The London Boroughs of Lewisham and Southwark have shown support for the project and, with them, TfL continues to develop plans for the Bakerloo line extension, including tunnel design, station designs and plans for a possible extension beyond Lewisham.

Southwark Council‘s Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Development, Councillor Helen Dennis, said: “The proposed Bakerloop Bus service would be a fantastic addition to the transport infrastructure supporting Southwark and its neighbouring boroughs.

“We hope that people will get on board with the Bakerloop and ultimately back the Bakerloo Line Extension, with all the benefits that will bring for our community and local economy.”
