In December 2024, Berkley Homes changed their plans for the Aylesham centre.
The developer initially planned to build 270 affordable homes but later announced they would only build 70.
Only 12% of these homes would be affordable, and locals were already unhappy with the demolition of the Aylesham Centre, so the announcement of less affordable housing caused protests and backlash from the residents of Peckham.
The people of Peckham fear these homes will displace the community, including businesses which have traded in the centre for decades and have nowhere else to go.
There is already a need for affordable housing in Peckham with more than 4,000 households on the waiting list for social housing.
SHAPE Coalition is a new coalition of campaign groups which have come together to demand Southwark Council take emergency action on the planning and housing crisis in the borough
They hold council meetings and protests across South East London, and are currently campaigning for a halt, or better agreement on the Aylesham Centre agreement.
