The Golden Hinde celebrates its 30th anniversary being docked at London Bridge

The Golden Hinde is celebrating its 30th anniversary being docked at London Bridge with Drake’s replica ship undergoing extensive redevelopment to return it to its former glory.

The replica ship arrived at London Bridge in 1997 following trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific trips to ports in Japan, Northeast US and southern England.

The original Golden Hinde was used by Sir Francis Drake in his circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580.

Angus Francis-Coleman, Director of the Golden Hinde, said: “It has been an incredible classroom over the last 30 years.”

The Golden Hinde is currently undergoing redevelopment with 100 tons of timber being used to replace the old and rotting infrastructure.

Today, the ship is used as an event space, for school trips and private functions, allowing Londonders to experience the world of Drake in the modern world.
