Croydon Radio Link expanded in attempt to improve area’s safety

Croydon is bidding to become safer as the Radio Link scheme is expanded after funding from the council.

The extension to the Croydon Business Improvement District’s (BID) Radio Link scheme will see seven additional radios made available to frontline teams in the Croydon’s Town Centre Taskforce.

This will improve response time to immediate issues, in an effort to make the area safer. The council is working in partnership with residents, statutory, voluntary, community and faith sector organisations to tackle antisocial behaviour.

Executive Mayor of Croydon Jason Perry said: “This investment shows a shared commitment to partnership working, making the Town Centre safer and more responsive to the needs of the community.

“By enabling real-time intelligence sharing, the scheme plays a crucial role in tackling everyday challenges such as shoplifting, antisocial behaviour, and public safety concerns, whilst also offering support for vulnerable individuals.”

Chief executive at Croydon BID Matthew Sims said: “We’re pleased to welcome Croydon Council into the scheme.

“It’s a great example of joined-up working through the Town Centre Taskforce making a difference on the ground.”

The additional seven radios increases the total number of active users to 93, which will improve efficiency of real-time updates on crime in the area.

The beneficiaries include services for rough sleepers, the drugs and alcohol support services Change Grow Live and Croydon Reach, Anima Youth and P4YE working with young people, and Surrey Street Market council officers collaborating with traders.

The Croydon BID Radio Link was launched in April 2023, designed to connect local businesses, the Metropolitan Police, Croydon BID Street Rangers, and security teams in the Croydon Town Centre.

Croydon-based businesses can sign up to the Croydon BID Radio Link scheme by going to their website.
