A small Bermondsey market played host to this year’s annual Okinawa Day event, that saw people from around the world gather to celebrate Japan’s southernmost islands this Saturday.
The event attracts large crowds and brings the local community together showcasing the unique and distinct culture of this tropical archipelago.
Okinawa Day has gone through a number of iterations and locations before finally settling in The Blue Market, where the wide, open market square provides the perfect space for traditional music and dance performances.
The day went down a treat, with locals and visitors alike getting involved and joining in with the island spirit.
I spoke with the organisers and some of the performers to get a feel of what makes Okinawa’s culture so special and what the day means to them.
