Naiktha Bains and Maia Lumsden are relishing the chance to step foot on the hallowed courts of Wimbledon once again after another win at the All England Club.
The wildcards had already pulled off a significant scalp in SW19, downing 11th seed Anna Danilina and Xu Yifan in a three-set thriller in the opening round.
But they were not rewarded with an easy second round encounter, with the British duo facing Magda Linette and Bernarda Pera – two players who were both seeded in the singles draw.
But Leeds’ Bains and Glasgow’s Maia Lumsden carried on the confidence gained from their round one victory, and delivered a stylish performance to down the Polish-American pairing 6-4 6-4 and reach the round three.
“I think we played better than our first round, to be honest, in terms of stuff we were trying to do,” said Bains.
“There’s definitely things that we want to do better and can do better, but that is exciting going into more matches. Hopefully we can keep improving day by day and see where that takes us.
“I think we served really well and I think we were really capitalising on that. We were holding a lot easier and it felt easier in that respect. I think we started off the match returning better but I think we can still return better.
Lumsden added: “It was a bit of a different match. We did well on our service games and got the one break in each set when we needed to.
“Before the tournament we said to each other that we wanted to do better than last year, so I’m glad we’ve done that now but we want to keep going.”
After bettering their run to the second round last year, a spot in the last eight is at stake when they next take to court.
Up next for Bains and Lumsden are Slovakian pairing Viktoria Hruncakova and Tereza Mihalikova, who rallied from a set down to beat another British pairing in the form of Harriet Dart and Heather Watson.
And they are certainly not an unfamiliar pairing for either Bains or Lumsden.
Bains commented: “Our last couple of opponents, we’ve not known them as well, but we do know these from juniors.
“We’ll know what to expect this time as supposed to not knowing, but that doesn’t change anything. We’ll just take care of our stuff and hopefully we can get the win.”
