Katie Swan in career-best shape after opening Surbiton win

Katie Swan insists she is in the shape of her life after waltzing into the last 16 at the LTA’s Lexus Surbiton Trophy.

The 24-year-old from Bristol stormed to a convincing 6-2 6-0 triumph over Canadian Carol Zhao in West London.

The world No.162 will now face either fellow Brit Maia Lumsden or seventh seed Oceane Dodin for a place in the quarter-finals.

And Swan believes she is well-placed to impress in the latter stages after enjoying an excellent preparation for the first grass court event of the British season.

“I really feel that I am in the best shape I have ever been, and I felt that when I was out there today,” said Swan, who is supported by the LTA’s Pro Access Programme.

“I am feeling strong and mentally motivated so I am just looking forward to the next match.

“I think my confidence came from the practices I have been having over the last few weeks.

“I had a tough clay court season but I still think that I improved physically.

“That was one of my goals coming out of the clay and I have already taken that into the grass these last couple of weeks.”

Swan was also delighted to be competing at the LTA’s Lexus Surbiton Trophy.

She missed recent editions of the West London tournament due to injury but was buzzing to be back to her best on home soil.

She added: “It is great, I was saying to my coach earlier that I actually haven’t played at Surbiton for about four years because I have always been injured in the week.

“So I am just really happy to be here, feeling really good physically.

“I am just pumped to keep going and for my next match.

“I am really happy with the performance today, I have been feeling really good in practice and I am just eager to be back out there competing on the grass.

“I think there are going to be some big results over the grass court season, we are all pushing each other.”
