A Greenwich woman has appealed for information after her family cat was found dead after what a vet believes was a dog attack.
Harley Levey, 27, said she was “heartbroken” when her sister-in-law told her that Simba, a domestic shorthair brown tabby, had been found in Pelton Road on Sunday 20 September.
The nursery worker spoke to a neighbour and reviewed doorbell camera footage but is still trying to find out what happened to the animal she described as “a precious, beloved family member”.
She posted on Facebook: “What makes this even more heart-breaking is that someone left him there instead of stopping to help.
“I am not looking to cause trouble or make accusations. I just desperately want answers and want to know what happened to our poor baby.”
Levey has appealed for neighbours to check their CCTV and doorbell cameras for anything suspicious from 8pm onwards.
The cat was taken to an out-of-hours MediVet in Beckenham, where a vet said the injuries were likely to have been caused by a dog attack rather than a hit-and-run.
Levey said her brother arrived home around 10 minutes after her sister-in-law found Simba.
She said: “Honestly, I just feel so sad because if my brother had gotten home 10 minutes earlier, Simba would have been back indoors. None of this would have happened and he would still be with us.”
The UK’s largest cat welfare charity, Cats Protection, reported that within a five-year period, 270 cases of dog attacks on cats were reported in the UK press, 80% of which were fatal.
The charity is campaigning to create new legislation that will allow the prosecution of dog owners whose dogs attack, injure or kill cats.
