WATCH: Southwark graffiti club getting children away from screens

Cockney Green is a Southwark based graffiti club set up in October last year which aims to be a safe space for children to develop art skills and to ditch their devices.

The fortnightly sessions encourage children to get together and try graffiti in a safe space.

They offer children a chance to create as well as the opportunity to socialise with each other.

Sessions allow attendees to express themselves and to gain confidence in something new.

Children don’t always just spray paint the walls – often donations are provided for the artwork.

Previous weeks have seen skateboards and shoes as canvasses.

Kathryn McGuiness, co-founder of the club said: “It is a safe space for children to express themselves and for them to get off their screens!”

Celeste, frequent attendee of the club said: “It’s a way of expressing yourself through art, it feels more loose and relaxed than art at school.”
