Market Root, London’s biggest Korean creatives market, will return to Peckham on 8 and 9 August for its seventh edition, bringing together 60 independent Korean artists.
The two-day event at Copeland Park will showcase Korean fashion, ceramics, art, food, and even some exclusive product launches, designed to celebrate Korean creativity.
This edition’s theme, ‘Breaking Away, You Are Detected’, encourages participating artists to move beyond their usual work by experimenting with new ideas and presenting the visitors with something they have not seen before.
Market Root was founded in 2024 by fashion designer Hyeon Ju “Jules” Kim and interior designer Soo Jin Yang after experiencing “isolation, disconnection and a real lack of information”, whilst exhibiting their own accessories brand, Hobul.
Jules and Soo said: “‘Breaking Away’ feels like the perfect theme because it gives our vendors the freedom to take risks, try something different and introduce a new side of their artistic practice.
“We want visitors to leave having discovered a designer, artist, maker or flavour they had never encountered before, while also feeling part of the creative community that has grown around Market Root.”
This comes at a time when Korean culture continues to attract interest in the UK, extending beyond music and television to include food, fashion, skincare and art.
The event will place a greater emphasis on cultural experiences, allowing visitors to explore work from designers including London Fashion Week regular Eudon Choi, sample Korean street food from KIWA, watch live calligraphy by Glsssi, and receive a complimentary mango makgeolli slush if they are among the first 1,000 visitors each day.
When they are not attending a community discussion featuring Korean speakers living in London, visitors will also be able to buy a coffee from Market Root’s partnership with Price Paid, whereby all the proceeds from coffee sales will support a charitable cause.
Jules and Soo said they hope visitors leave having discovered something new, adding that they are “not building a market that runs once and disappears”, but instead “ a community that grows alongside the people who support it, for the long run.”
Market Root will take place at Copeland Park in Peckham on Saturday 8 August from 11am to 6pm and Sunday 9 August from 10am to 5pm, with general admission costing £3 after the opening hour, or £5 for a weekend pass.
