WATCH: Borough Market taken over by primary school pupils

Borough Market hosted 60 pupils from 12 primary schools across London on Thursday, where they traded their own harvested fruit and vegetables for the annual Young Marketeers Summer Sale.

After harvesting their crops in March, the mini traders took to the market stalls where they fundraised £730 for food redistribution charity Plan Zheroes.

The Young Marketeers programme, a collaboration between charity School Food Matters and the Borough Market trust, has now been operating for 14 years with the aim of teaching children how to grow crops alongside the impacts of food production.

School Food Matters founder Stephanie Slater said: “We want every child to understand that food begins in the soil, not on a supermarket shelf.

“There’s no better way to bring that to life than by giving children the chance to grow their own fruit and vegetables at school.”

Trader Sharon Crane, from the market’s Gated Garden, gave the young entrepreneurs her expert insider tips on how to present a stall and deliver quality customer service ahead of the big day.

She said: “It’s amazing to see how thoroughly they have taken everything on board! I’m impressed at how all of them have set up their stalls.

“It’s been delightful to see how much they have loved to engage with customers and showing off their produce.”
