The Southbank Centre turns 75 this year and had a summer of free events to celebrate, including a weekend of hip-hop in collaboration with ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company.
Curated by young people, the iconic arts venue had a busy schedule of accessible and diverse music and dance across evenings and weekends on their terrace overlooking the River Thames.
The hip-hop weekend in August included open workshops with alumni of the ZooNation youth training programme (ZYC) and showcase performances from the current generation learning with the company, London Studio Centre, Instigate Unknown and Sadler’s Wells Company of Elders, as well as DJ sets and dance battles.
Callum Webdale, ZYC Alumni Curator, ran a house workshop which encouraged the audience to get up and dance and he said: “The energy of the public was perfect today.
“Doing stuff like this joins everyone together.”
The Sunday also involved an inter-generational jam between the young dancers of ZYC and the Company of Elders which encouraged the participants and audience to share life-stories and dance moves.
