A ‘darkly hedonistic’ adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s seminal anti-war work Mother Courage and Her Children opens at Shakespeare’s Globe next month.
It will be playing from 7 May until 27 June and stars Olivier-winning actress Michelle Terry (Tribes, Three Sisters) as the titular character.
Considered one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, it centres Mother Courage, who, with her three children, Eilif, Swiss Cheese, and Kattrin, tries to navigate the Thirty Years’ War with her knack for business.
Director Elle While said: “Directing Brecht’s masterpiece in a brilliant adaptation by Anna Jordan is totally exhilarating.
“This is a fantastically talented and huge-hearted cast, and I couldn’t be more excited to start rehearsals on this most pertinent play for our current times.”
The Globe’s adaptation is described as asking “urgent questions about survival, capitalism and complicity”, bringing “the yard vividly to life with fury, empathy, and joy-as-rebellion”.
Vinnie Heaven (HBO’s The Nevers) will star as Eilif, while Rawaed Asde (Romeo and Juliet) and Rachelle Diedericks (Andor) will play Swiss Cheese and Kattrin respectively.
