WATCH: Felix Project expands Deptford depot as redistribution hits record levels

The Felix Project redistributed a record 44 million meals across London in 2025 as demand for food support continues to rise across the capital.

At the organisation’s Deptford depot in south London, volunteers and staff sort and repack surplus food which would otherwise go to waste before delivering it to community organisations across the city.

The charity says nearly 440,000 people are now supported each week through more than 1,200 community groups across London, showing the scale of food redistribution and growing reliance on support networks.

Food arriving at the warehouse comes from across the food industry, including farms, manufacturers, supermarkets and wholesalers.

Charlotte Neal, press and strategic communications manager at The Felix Project, said the organisation’s aim is to rescue as much good-quality, edible surplus food as possible.

The project rescues food which would otherwise go to waste and redistributes it through its network of four London depots located in the north, south, east and west of the city.

The charity reported redistributing more than 18,000 tonnes of food in 2025, which it says equates to around 44 million meals with a retail value of approximately £88 million.

At the Deptford depot, volunteers play a central role in sorting food deliveries and preparing them for redistribution to organisations supporting families across south east London.

The organisation says around 13,000 of its volunteers contributed more than 158,000 hours last year to help sort and deliver food across its operations.

Neil, who has volunteered at the Deptford depot for nearly three years, said he began helping after retiring and looking for a way to contribute to the community.

He said: “It can be emotional, especially at Christmas when you realise you might be delivering what could be a family’s Christmas lunch.”

The Felix Project was founded in 2016 with the aim of reducing food waste and ensuring surplus food reaches communities facing food insecurity.

The charity says initiatives such as Felix Kitchen in East London, which produces around 5,000 ready-to-eat meals each day, help support organisations working with people who may not have access to cooking facilities.
